Day 5: Procession and Pilgrimage

The pilgrim waddle has become either a sensation or an epidemic...I think is spreads easily within pilgrim families.  It has also come to be called the "pilgrim shuffle".

Today, we walked from Puente la Reina to Estella...I am not sure how many kilometers, but it was a relatively short day, under 20km.  We started out at 6:50am (NEW RECORD!) and made it to Estella by 1:50pm.  It's like vacation!  Lunch, laundry, and grocery shopping were all done by 4ish I think, and soon I'll make dinner.  Then, we have Mass at 8pm (yay!).

Woohoo! Only 695km to Santiago!

Even though today's distance was shorter, and the terrain was flatter, it was a tough day for me because my body is starting get tired.  I think I moved a little slower and breathed a little harder, but it was ok, even good.  No step or breath was wasted :)  And, the day was no less beautiful...

Chris opted to make this step of the pilgrimage on horseback:

At one of the towns we passed through, the people were getting ready for Mass and a Eucharistic procession to celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ.  Everyone was very dressed up, and there were even little flower girls for the procession!

"The Feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord and the procession with the Blessed Sacrament, celebrating the sacrament and signifying God’s presence in our world and in our lives and reminding us of our common pilgrimage to Heaven, is a prayerful and edifying act of the entire Church. " (a quote from an article briefly explaining this feast day and Eucharistic processions http://www.eucharistia.us/eucharistic-procession/)

I happened upon this quote and thought it was providentially appropriate, considering we are on a bit of a pilgrimage ourselves ;) Hopefully this pilgrimage to Santiago helps me to be a better pilgrim in everyday life, and to walk with the Church on pilgrimage to heaven!  Now, this means living simply, not getting too settled, keeping the goal in mind, forming friendships, and praying with every step.  I already know that without any of these things, I wouldn't make it to Santiago; I'll learn what else is really necessary along the way.  I have a feeling these lessons will come in handy beyond Santiago.  Pilgrim for life!!

Time for dinner, Mass, and later bed.  Ciao ciao!...or, I mean, adios!

P.S. I am loving Spain,
but Roma, I miss you!
